Witnesses who are signs of God´s Kingdom
Where can we see the signs of God´s Kingdom? This is the sign that Jesus gave that the Kingdom was among us: “The blind see again, the deaf hear, the lepers are cleansed, the dead are raised to life and the Good News is proclaimed to the poor” (Mt 11, 5). Yes, as the prophet Isaiah said, the coming of the Kingdom is shown in the signs that bring renewal to those who are poorest and most vulnerable.
We too are witnesses of these signs. During Advent, we have enjoyed having Mass in the poorest “places” of our neighbourhoods. We have prepared 200 children from primary school for First Holy Communion. They are children who barely know how to read and write, because of how much school time they lost during the pandemic. Almost a thousand young people at the National High School Institute prepared to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Among them is dear Oliver. He comes from a “broken family” but has received a human and religious formation from our community and the Servants of Mary in Cavite. He is now 15 and wants to enter the minor Seminary to become a priest.
If we open up inside and let ourselves be touched by God´s love, we will see life flourishing in the midst of our deserts and dry bones
Here are some examples, I know of: A boy from Nathan de Brito Street who embraced Pope Francis in the meeting with young people, entered as a postulant in the Order of Friars Minor and will soon be ordained a priest. Darwin Ramos rescued from the street in Pasay City with a degenerative disease that left him in a wheelchair was welcomed into the Tulay Ng Kabataan foundation. He led an exemplary life and died at only 17. He will become the third Filipino saint. It is amazing to see the Nativity Scene that the people of La Palma Island, Spain made on the ashes of a volcano.
When the poor are evangelized they become the best messengers of this New Life. They are signs of God´s Kingdom
